Before Comparing Prices in Asia, Understand Where Your Brand Comes From
When a brand asks whether it is priced correctly for an Asian market, it usually starts by looking at Asian shelves. The better starting point is its home market, because that is where its price position was set.
A price only means something relative to the competitors it sits beside. At home, that comparison is shaped by three things: the international competitors the brand is actually measured against, the platform its customers actually use, and the currency it actually sells in. The home market defines all three. Remove it, and the brand's price is a number with no context.
This is where misjudgment creeps in. A brand that reads as mid-priced at home is not guaranteed to read that way abroad, where the competitive set is different. If it carries its home price across, or assumes its premium or value position will travel with it, it is relying on a position it has never measured in the new market. The error runs in both directions. A brand can overprice where its home premium isn't supported, or leave margin unclaimed where it is cheaper than its rivals without knowing it.
The commercial consequence is a launch price chosen on instinct. Too high, and velocity suffers in the first months, when distributor confidence is most fragile. Too low, and the brand gives away margin it will struggle to recover later.
The more important question is not "what should we charge in this market?" It is "where does our price already sit against comparable competitors at home, and how does that relationship hold up elsewhere?" Establishing that baseline first turns an Asian price comparison into a test of something known rather than a guess about something assumed.
Samana Insights' Price Research Analysis Framework (Framework 12) is a seven-step method for establishing where a product sits in the competitive pricing landscape, in the home market and each target market, using price per gram so comparisons remain valid across pack sizes. Its first step is to identify the home market, which anchors every comparison that follows.
